Becoming New: Embracing God’s Transformative Power in Your Life

God is persistent in His pursuit of your transformation.

When we become followers of Christ, we step into a lifelong journey of transformation. This process is called sanctification, which simply means “to make holy.” It’s not something we achieve on solely our own. Instead, it’s a spirit-led work that God lovingly carries out in each of us, day by day, moment by moment.

In Galatians 5:19-21, Paul gives us a clear picture of who we are before the Spirit of God begins His work in our lives—marked by selfishness, chaos, and disconnection from our Creator. But through Jesus Christ, God’s ultimate transforming agent, we’re given the opportunity to become someone entirely new. And what a gift that is!

Still, even with this beautiful opportunity before us, change is hard, isn’t it? As moms, our lives are full—overflowing, even—with responsibilities, noise, and constant demands. And if we’re being honest, sometimes it’s not just that we’re too busy for transformation... we resist it.

Maybe you recognize the benefit of change, but you’re worn out. Maybe you want to grow, but you just can’t find the time to commit. Or maybe—if you dare to admit it—you’re not sure you really want to change at all.

But here’s the stunning truth: God is persistent in His pursuit of your transformation.

Galatians 5:22-23 shows us the fruit that blossoms when the Holy Spirit is at work within us—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These aren’t just virtues to strive for; they’re evidence of God’s Spirit doing what only He can do—growing us from the inside out. God is persistent in doing this work in us, but the work grows exponentially when we put in effort on our end as well. Remember how I said we have an opportunity to change through the work on the cross?

Our transformation is like tending to a tree: the extra effort of pruning and watering allows for abundant growth. In the same way, our cooperation in God’s transformative work matters! Our spiritual growth thrives when we water it. When we lean into small, consistent spiritual disciplines—like reading our Bible, praying with intention, meditating on Scripture, or simply carving out quiet moments to listen—we become more receptive to the Spirit’s whisper and more aware of God’s gentle nudges.

The transformation isn’t always flashy or fast. But over time, those daily choices—the micro-disciplines of grace—will produce a harvest that impacts not only your own soul but your family and generations beyond.

So, sweet friend, remember this: You are a work in progress—and God isn’t finished with you yet!

A Prayer for the Becoming

Father, thank You for loving me enough to transform me persistently into the woman You’ve called me to be. Even when I resist, even when I’m weary, even when I’m distracted, You never give up on me. Help me to embrace the opportunity to prune and water my soul. Give me a desire to meet with You daily, to listen for Your voice, and to surrender to Your shaping hands. May the fruit of Your Spirit be evident in my heart, in my home, and in every part of my life. Make me more like Jesus, one step at a time. Amen.
